Tohu Wines is proudly Aotearoa New Zealand’s first Māori-owned wine company, established in 1998 by Wakatu Incorporation, a collective of over 4,000 families who descend from the original landowners of Te Tauihu (the top of the South Island). Every bottle reflects a deep connection to whenua (land), whakapapa (heritage), and a commitment to kaitiakitanga (guardianship of the environment). This Pinot Gris is grown on Tohu’s coastal vineyards in the Awatere Valley, where strong winds, cool nights, and free-draining soils shape a wine of clarity and finesse.
Winemaking
The 2024 vintage is made with a focus on purity and texture. Grapes are harvested in the cool of morning and gently pressed. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel, with a portion aged briefly on lees for added depth. The resulting wine is dry in style, highlighting the brightness and elegance of Awatere fruit.
Bouquet
Delicate yet expressive, with aromas of fresh pear, apple blossom, and white peach. Hints of honeysuckle, citrus peel, and soft spice add lift and complexity to the bouquet.
Palate
Light to medium-bodied, the palate offers juicy pear and stone fruit flavours, balanced by a crisp line of acidity and a smooth, slightly creamy texture. Gentle spice and a whisper of salinity lend dimension to the clean, dry finish.
Food Pairing
A brilliant match with green-lipped mussels, Thai fish curry, or a fresh goat’s cheese and pear salad. Also ideal with aromatic vegetable dishes and lighter fare.
Cellaring
Vibrant and drinkable now, but can be cellared for up to 3 years, developing gentle richness and soft nutty notes while retaining its freshness and poise.
