From a single vineyard in the Awatere Valley, this beautifully expressive Albariño was selectively machine-harvested to retain whole berries and preserve its aromatic integrity. After gentle pressing and cold settling, the clarified juice underwent cool fermentation in stainless steel using select aroma-enhancing yeast strains. A short three-month maturation on fine lees added depth and mouthfeel, before bottling in August 2024. The result is a vivid, refreshing wine with natural tension and purity.
Bouquet Aromatic and pure, the nose is laced with white florals, lemon zest, green apple, and a faint salty edge that hints at the sea breeze of Marlborough’s coastal soils. Subtle stone fruit and lime blossom add lift and complexity.
Palate Zesty and textured, with layers of citrus peel, nashi pear, and juicy nectarine. The acidity is crisp yet well integrated, balancing beautifully with the saline minerality and a gentle lees-derived creaminess. The finish is dry, clean, and invigorating.
Food Pairing A natural match for Marlborough green-lipped mussels, steamed tuatua, or pan-fried snapper with lemon butter. It also pairs brilliantly with Japanese tempura, Thai green curry, or Spanish-style octopus with smoked paprika and potatoes.
Interesting Fact Albariño is a white grape native to Galicia in north-western Spain. In New Zealand, it thrives in Awatere’s cool, windy conditions, where it gains extra aromatic lift and structure—making it one of the country’s most promising emerging varietals.
