Sourced from select parcels in the Heretaunga Plains, this premium Albariño is part of Smith & Sheth’s CRU range, showcasing the finest expressions of New Zealand terroir. The fruit is hand-harvested and fermented in a combination of stainless steel and large oak barrels, with time on lees to build depth and minerality. The result is a dry, textural wine that balances saline freshness with aromatic intensity.
Bouquet
Vibrant and coastal, with layers of lemon zest, white peach, and crushed seashell. Floral notes of orange blossom and chamomile mingle with a faint herbal lift and a whisper of fennel.
Palate
Crisp and finely structured, with juicy citrus and stone fruit carried by a clean mineral core. Lees ageing brings a subtle creaminess, while bright acidity drives a long, dry finish with elegant salinity. Focused, poised, and quietly powerful.
Food Pairing
An outstanding match for fresh oysters, grilled octopus, or lemon-baked snapper. Also excellent with goat’s cheese, fennel and citrus salad, or Vietnamese spring rolls.
Interesting Fact
Albariño is still relatively rare in New Zealand, and Smith & Sheth were early champions of the variety in Hawke’s Bay, seeing its natural affinity for the region’s warm days, cool nights, and maritime climate. The Heretaunga Plains' ancient riverbed soils add distinctive energy and tension to the wine.
Cellaring
Delicious now for its brightness and texture, but can cellar for 4–6 years, developing savoury depth, subtle honeyed notes, and greater complexity with time.
