Winemaking Crafted in the cool climate of Central Otago, Putangi Pinot Gris 2023 is a wine of clarity, texture, and quiet strength. Hand-harvested fruit was fermented in stainless steel, with a portion matured on lees to build roundness and depth. The result is a wine that honours nature—with purity of flavour and a rugged elegance befitting its namesake.
This wine is named in tribute to Richard Henry, a conservation pioneer who in 1894 rowed alone through the wild waters of Dusky Sound in Fiordland to rescue New Zealand’s endangered birds. His dinghy, Putangi, named after the native Paradise Duck, became a symbol of dedication, courage, and connection to the land.
Bouquet Lifted aromas of ripe pear, white peach, and blossom, with a gentle thread of honeysuckle and spice. A floral freshness captures the wild beauty of Central Otago.
Palate Bright and textural with flavours of poached pear, stone fruit, and a soft undercurrent of ginger and citrus. The mouthfeel is silky and rounded, balanced by vibrant acidity and a dry, mineral-laced finish.
Food Pairing Excellent with pan-seared scallops, Thai green curry, or pork with apple. Also a lovely match for roasted cauliflower or herbed goat cheese on sourdough.
Cellaring Enjoy now through 2026 while its fresh fruit and gentle spice are at their peak.
Interesting Fact Putangi is more than a wine—it’s a tribute to one man’s quiet heroism in the face of impossible odds. When the day feels long, remember Richard Henry’s 14-year mission to save New Zealand’s rarest birds, and take heart... there’s always Pinot.
