Distillation & Maturation Pōkeno Totara Cask is a world-first single malt whisky, matured in native New Zealand Tōtara wood. Made from 100% locally grown barley and aged in a combination of bourbon and Tōtara casks, this release celebrates true New Zealand provenance. Non-chill filtered and bottled at 46%, it delivers a flavour experience unlike any other—marrying local spirit and indigenous oak in a bold, pioneering dram.
Nose Aromatic and inviting, with notes of golden syrup, vanilla and baked apple. Hints of sweet spice, toasted wood and native herbs lend a uniquely Aotearoa character.
Palate Warm, smooth and layered, the palate shows honeyed malt, dried apricot and spice cake with undertones of cedar, manuka smoke and a gentle herbal lift. The Tōtara influence brings a soft, earthy quality and a long, warming finish full of character and charm.
Food Pairing Perfect with smoked duck, roasted kumara or aged gouda. Also great with spiced fruit loaf or kawakawa dark chocolate.
Cellaring Enjoy now to experience the freshness of the native oak, or savour slowly over time to discover how it evolves in the glass.
Interesting Fact This is the first whisky in the world ever matured in Tōtara—a native NZ tree once used by Māori to carve waka and store food. Pōkeno’s innovation turns this taonga into a vessel for crafting whisky with truly local soul.
