Pokeno Exploration Series No. 01 Totara Cask Finish Single Malt New Zealand Whisky pays homage to the indigenous totara tree, revered for its integral role in shaping Aotearoa's history. Utilised by Maori for crafting waka, homes, carvings, and more, totara wood infuses this whisky with its distinctive character, boasting sweet and creamy nuances when toasted. Handcrafted by Mike, the Cooper at New Zealand's sole working cooperage, these 200-litre totara barrels mark a pioneering venture in whisky maturation. Following initial ageing in first-fill bourbon casks, the whisky undergoes a second maturation period in these unique barrels. Delicate aromas of creamy coconut, sweet-scented sap, ripe white peach, and freshly cut wood greet the senses, while the palate delights in flavours of bitter lemon, stone fruit, and hints of dark chocolate, culminating in a long and sweet finish. Honoured with a silver award at the World Whiskies Awards 2024, Pokeno Exploration Series No. 01 embodies innovation and tradition, offering a sensory journey through New Zealand's rich cultural heritage.
