Grown on the high-altitude slopes of Stellenbosch, the 2019 Reserve Chardonnay is made from low-yielding vines planted in ancient granite soils. The fruit is hand-harvested, whole-bunch pressed, and wild-fermented in French oak barrels (30% new). The wine undergoes full malolactic fermentation and is aged on lees for 10 months, creating a style that balances richness and vibrancy with a signature creamy texture and mineral backbone.
Bouquet The nose is lush and expressive, offering aromas of ripe peach, lemon curd, and golden apple. Subtle oak notes of vanilla, hazelnut and toast are lifted by a fresh floral edge and hints of flint and spice.
Palate Inviting and full-flavoured, the palate opens with ripe citrus and stone fruit, followed by layers of roasted nuts, creamy oak and soft baking spice. A bright seam of acidity carries the richness beautifully, finishing long and textural with hints of crushed stone and toasted brioche. Generous and polished, this is a South African Chardonnay with real presence and finesse.
Food Pairing Perfect with roasted chicken, pork loin with apple glaze, or lobster in brown butter. Also delicious with creamy pasta, grilled corn, or soft cheeses like brie or Mt Eliza.
Cellaring Drinking beautifully now, but will evolve through 2029. Cellaring will bring added savoury depth, richness and integration.
Interesting Fact At DeMorgenzon, Baroque music is played among the vines 24 hours a day. The winery believes this gentle sound vibration helps promote vine health and balance—a philosophy as unique as the wines themselves.
