Cullen ‘Vanya’ Cabernet Sauvignon 2016 is the flagship release from one of Australia’s most revered biodynamic estates. Named after chief winemaker Vanya Cullen, this wine is crafted only in exceptional vintages from a single, low-yielding Cabernet Sauvignon block planted in 1971. The fruit is hand-harvested on a full moon fruit day, fermented with wild yeasts, and aged in a mix of new and seasoned French oak for 18 months. The 2016 vintage was outstanding, allowing for perfect ripeness, balance, and incredible fruit purity without additions—zero sulphur added and bottled without fining or filtration.
Bouquet Profound and lifted, with aromas of cassis, mulberry, and violet interwoven with cedar, graphite, dried herbs, and a hint of red earth. A touch of oak spice and floral perfume adds further complexity.
Palate Refined yet intense, with beautifully sculpted tannins and flowing elegance. Ripe blackcurrant, blueberry, and dark plum are layered with savoury notes of bay leaf, cigar box, and crushed gravel. The mouthfeel is silky, precise, and deeply mineral, with remarkable length and quiet power. A pure, focused expression of place.
Food Pairing Pair with roast lamb, dry-aged beef, mushroom Wellington, or lentil stew with rosemary and garlic. Also excellent with mature hard cheeses and dishes infused with truffle.
Cellaring Superbly age-worthy. Drink from 2024 onwards, with peak potential between 2030 and 2050. Store in ideal cellar conditions to preserve its natural brilliance.
Interesting Fact The 2016 Vanya was produced without any additions, including sulphur—a rare feat for a fine red wine—making it not only certified biodynamic and organic, but also a striking example of natural winemaking at the highest level.
