Crafted from Syrah grown near the coast at Te Awanga, the Cape Kidnappers Syrah 2022 reflects Clearview’s balance of ripeness and restraint. The fruit was harvested in ideal conditions and fermented with partial whole bunch inclusion to enhance perfume and spice. Maturation in seasoned French oak barrels allowed the wine to soften and integrate while preserving the purity of Hawke’s Bay Syrah fruit.
Bouquet Fragrant aromas of black cherry, boysenberry, and dark plum mingle with violet, white pepper, and hints of baking spice. A touch of savoury olive tapenade adds complexity.
Palate Medium-bodied and silky with fine tannins and bright acidity. Juicy dark berry flavours lead, followed by notes of cracked pepper, clove, and a whisper of vanilla oak. There’s a coastal freshness running through the wine, giving it a lifted, elegant finish with just enough grip.
Food Pairing An excellent match for venison, duck breast with cherry jus, or chargrilled aubergine with tahini and herbs. Also pairs well with aged cheddar or Moroccan lamb tagine.
Cellaring Beautifully drinkable now, but will continue to develop savoury depth over the next 5–7 years.
Interesting Fact Clearview’s vineyards sit just minutes from Cape Kidnappers, one of New Zealand’s most iconic natural landmarks. That proximity brings a distinctive maritime freshness to their Syrah—a style that’s both refined and regionally expressive.
