Named after the dramatic coastal cliffs near Clearview Estate, Cape Kidnappers Merlot 2022 is a showcase of premium Hawke’s Bay red winemaking. The fruit was picked at optimum ripeness, fermented with gentle cap management to preserve soft tannins, then aged in a mix of seasoned oak barrels. The result is a plush, fruit-forward Merlot with a polished finish and just enough oak to bring harmony and warmth.
Bouquet Fragrant notes of dark cherry, plum, and raspberry compote unfold with underlying hints of cocoa, baking spice, and dried herbs.
Palate Medium to full-bodied with velvety tannins and a rounded mouthfeel. Flavours of ripe black doris plum, redcurrant, and a touch of blackberry are layered with mocha, clove, and soft cedar. There’s a pleasing freshness through the mid-palate that brings lift and balance, making this a very drinkable and approachable Merlot.
Food Pairing Pair with herb-crusted lamb, grilled portobello mushrooms, or a rich tomato and eggplant pasta bake. Also works beautifully with hard cheeses like aged gouda or manchego.
Cellaring Drinking well now and will develop added softness and savoury complexity over the next 3–5 years.
