Winemaking The McDonald Series pays tribute to Tom McDonald, a pioneer of fine winemaking in Hawke’s Bay. Sourced from carefully selected vineyard sites across the region, this Syrah is crafted with a focus on structure, aromatics, and age-worthiness. The 2021 vintage was aged in French oak to build elegance and complexity while showcasing the region’s signature spice and dark fruit.
Bouquet Fragrant notes of blackberry, plum, and blueberry layered with black pepper, clove, violet, and subtle smoky oak.
Palate Medium to full-bodied with ripe dark fruits, fine-grained tannins, and a savoury undercurrent of spice and herbs. The texture is silky yet structured, finishing long and dry with mineral tension.
Food Pairing Ideal with roast lamb, venison, chargrilled aubergine, or mushroom and lentil dishes. A polished red that elevates both rustic and refined meals.
Cellaring Beautiful now with a decant, but will develop complexity over 6–10 years.
Interesting Fact Tom McDonald was one of New Zealand’s earliest champions of serious red wine, and this Syrah honours that legacy with poise, depth, and regional expression.
