Sourced from the prestigious Irongate Vineyard nestled within Hawke’s Bay's revered Gimblett Gravels, the Irongate Chardonnay stands as a testament to decades of exacting viticulture and winemaking prowess. Originating from a clandestine barrel fermentation experiment in 1985, this exclusive release epitomises the zenith of artisanal craftsmanship. Meticulously selected Mendoza clone vines, some exceeding three decades in age, produce grapes that undergo a painstaking process, including hand-picking and whole bunch pressing. Predominantly fermented with wild yeast in a blend of new and seasoned French oak barriques, the wine matures for nine months, during which lees stirring enhances complexity and palate weight. Upon tasting, aromas of peach, cashew, and lemon intertwine with subtle pastry and biscuit undertones, complemented by a discreet touch of oak. Evolving on the palate, it unfurls layers of apple, melon, and oaty notes, accompanied by hints of mineral and citrus, culminating in a beautifully concentrated and elegantly structured wine destined to endure, showcasing spectacular varietal and regional flavours.
